In-Class Caesar Essay
Even though Julius Caesar was a hero, he had to be the tyrant he was to obtain strength and power to become that hero. Caesar was loyal to Rome. Caesar had good sized expansions and campaigns. Caesar spoke his mind to the people and would help his people. Caesar was a tyrant for power and strength.
Although Caesar was a little bit of a tyrant, he needs power to be a hero. Caesar would kill anyone in his way. He would kill Senators if it meant somebody not being in his way. Caesar wanted power, he joined together with Pompey and the first triumvirate happened where three powerful people went together and became more powerful. He would later take over Rome by force and have Pompey’s head handed to him as a gift.
Caesar’s expansion of Rome and his victorious war efforts and campaigns prove to be heroism. If you take a look at Document 2 you can see how immensely he increased Rome. He almost doubled or did double it in size. Caesar was fearless when going into battle. He had to be for in Document 1 Caesar met Pompey with not near the number of men in his army as Pompey had in his and still won. Caesar won since Caesar had battle hardened troops. Caesar was a Conqueror and destroyer.
Caesar was not just a Conqueror and Destroyer he had many other strengths to make him the hero he was. As in Document 1 it says Caesar was a builder and a statesman. This is something that is rare for a leader that is a destroyer and conqueror. Caesar gave full voting rights in the Alps and he revised tax laws of Asia. He also resettled many Romans in new homes in the Roman Provinces. Caesar also reviewed the calendar the calendar they came up with is the one still used today with one very small adjustment.

Caesar was tired of the crime in the streets and he made the streets safer. When Caesar talked people would gather and listen to what he had to say. One day he spoke about the problems of how Rome had problems. That is why the people loved him he wanted to fix Rome’s problems. Caesar was a true leader and person of Rome for when he died Rome went downward.
Caesar was a tyrant for power for he would not let anyone get in his way. In Document 6 it talks on how he wanted more and more power. Caesar was all for power he was King in everything besides title. Caesar was even on Rome’s coins this clearly placed him as the highest person in Rome. People around the Rome province were calling him “Rex” it is latin for King. Julius Caesar staged an act where Antony tried placing a crown on his head and he rejected it for the public to see that he did not want to be king. When two tribunes call him Rex in the streets he had them arrested and then released as a threat for he wanted to not be known as king. I believe Caesar was drunk off power for he received the title dictator for life.
When you look at if he was a Hero or a Tyrant you think today he would have been a Tyrant and back then he would have been leaning a little towards the hero side. Today if you have many wars going on and you kill anyone in your way that is definitely tyrannical. Back then it is more towards the hero side because that is how you were socialized. It wasn’t as bad if you killed anyone in your way for they would probably try to kill you if you didn’t kill them.
