Day of The Dead
In this project assigned to us by Janae our task was to pay tribute to a lost family member or close friend in the Mexican style of day of the dead. Through this assignment we made an art piece for our person, a biography and produced food and an object to put on the altar to summon their spirit. This project’s main goal was to connect us to Spanish through learning cultural aspects of a Spanish-speaking nation.
Through Day of the Dead I learned that Day of the Dead is a time to pay tribute for our lost loved ones. In Day of the Dead the people of Mexico build altars to honor their loved ones where they put pictures, representations of that person and old items and foods they used to loved. The experience of the altar was really cool and different. To be able to perform a task of another culture was just a really cool thing for me to do and I loved it. To be able to celebrate the lives of those who are dead is really stress relieving because you get to experience this person through a new form. In this entire project my most proud aspect was my picture. I worked so hard on my picture it took around 8 hours to draw and around an hour to frame. Drawing is very hard for me and I know it turned out great so that’s why I’m most proud of it. If I were to do anything different in this project next time I would not let me computer crash for I had to restart this entire writing project over in less than a weeks worth of time. I believe the project wasn’t too difficult, I believe it was really stressful for me due to my computer breaking but anywhere around that the project was a very mellow project in which we were given the appropriate time to work on the project.

Journalism
In Journalism there is a ton of room to learn a language. That’s why in this project we were assigned to become journalists and take a role on the journalism crew. We were thrown in groups and my group decided to become a news crew and report the news to the people. The group then chose a country in which they would represent and started to research current events, sports or disasters. Group collaboration landed us representing Venezuela where we then branched off where two people were news anchors, another a sports commentator/reporter and an advertisement manager. After the scripts and roles were practiced filming and editing made the group into a news team.
Through this project I really connected as the advertisement manager. Life in Venezuela can be hard and tough yet they know they can avoid this life through baseball. Baseball has helped me overcome problems and it is something that I can relate to and understand. As an avid Colorado Rockies fan I connected to Carlos Gonzalez. Carlos Gonzalez is a Venezuelan baseball star, he has won many awards and I decided to become Cargo and sell the baseball bats he uses as a commercial. Through baseball I made a game out of my project.
This project may of been enjoyable yet I found it very difficult at times. Writing my script for this project I had problems conjugating and making sense of my sentences. Many words and phrases in earlier drafts of my script were rough and unrefined. I overcame this though and kept hard at it. My final draft wasn’t as refined as I wanted it so through winter break I continued to refine my script to allow my spanish to be understandable. This overcoming inspired me to continue on with my project and allowed me to practice my script hard. I am proud of myself for persevering through a language I’m not comfortable with and this experience has inspired me to try harder in spanish.
A project can teach you things about yourself that you’ve not known before. In this project I really learned my love and respect for the game of baseball. Baseball has been with me 12-13 years. Growing up in a baseball playing family made me be able to pitch and catch ideas through life. Through this project it really helped my collaboration skills. This helped in the group for we had many ideas on how we could do this project. In the end we came on a general idea of what we expected out of this project and how we would format it. After sitting down with the group I found that I was very good at being a leader while also being accepting of others’ ideas.
In a spanish speaking current events can affect the way you learn a language. Through current events the student can learn many values such as vocabulary, pronunciation and conjugation. This really helps the student by integrating it all at once and shows how things can change time and either be currently happening or did happen. This relates time and conjugation into a language by giving you a visual of what’s happening. Vocabulary is going to be integrated into anything you hear or see in a spanish speaking country. Yet, combining a visual, adding time windows and ownership can easily add to your experience in a country and how you experience learning a language. I learned that you cannot truly learn a language until you experience a country that speaks the language that you are trying to learn.
